Matthew 26:41 NRSV
Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Verse:
"Are ye able," said the Master, "to be crucified with me?" "Yea," the sturdy dreamers answered, "to the death we follow thee."
Refrain:
Lord, we are able. Our spirits are thine. Remold them, make us, like thee, divine. Thy guiding radiance above us shall be a beacon to God, to love, and loyalty.
I’ve always felt somewhat guilty when we sing this hymn, because I know that I would fail. To suffer as Jesus did and then literally carry the weight of the world in the form of a cross - who among us could really do that? Even his disciples could not stay awake to pray for Him when He needed them! In the times when life is going our way - good health, prosperity, happy families - or after a particularly inspiring sermon or meaningful devotional, we might sing this song with confidence. Yes, Jesus, we are able!!!
But in dark days of defeat, disappointment, depression, and despair our commitment diminishes as our human weakness is revealed. In truth, the only reason we can get to the cross and its promises is because Jesus went before us and He will go again with each of us - over and over, until our final journey to join Him. His presence diminishes the weight of our troubles and magnifies our blessings. Thanks be to God for this season of remembrance.

Dear Jesus, Thank You for carrying the cross - not just once, but over and over as You walk with us on our faith journeys. Thank You for your willingness to suffer for us. Most of all, we thank God for the promise and hope of Your resurrection. Amen
