Numbers 21:4-9 NRSV
From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.” Then the LORD sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD to take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.” So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.
Are We There Yet?
Last year, for Spring Break, we took the girls to Disney World. It was their first time ever, and our first time as adults. Of course, we got the usual backseat inquiry, “Are we there yet?” from each of them from time to time. Each time, we asked them to keep their faith in us, promising them that the end of the journey would be worth it. I can only imagine how hard it could be for the Lord’s people to keep their faith in the unknown, only going off what Moses could promise them.
Even though God had shown them, through Moses, to just have faith in Him, and He would get them to the promised land, their faith wavered. Thankfully, my husband and I didn’t have to pull out any snakes to get the girls to stay excited on our trip, and when we did get there, we all had a magical time. Before we were blessed with these two backseat critics, we prayed and prayed and prayed some more that God would make us parents. The journey was much longer than we expected, and there were times both of us questioned if He was ever going to give us what our hearts begged for.
Then, something unthinkable happened, and, for a moment, we truly believed our future was not going to include children. Yet, somehow, we kept our faith, and we trusted the journey and the path given to us. That path took us to where we needed to be, and a couple of years after we thought all hope was lost, we made it to our “promised land” of parenthood. ~Heather Vaught~
Lord, help me to trust in the journey You have chosen for me. Help me to understand that, though I may not ever know "the why", I must have faith in You and what You have planned for me. Instead of questioning You, help me to cherish each awesome moment and learn from the hard moments that I encounter throughout my life. Help me to grow myself and others each and every day. In You, I trust and pray, Amen.
